The invention relates to the removal of coke from a catalyst present in the form of individual particles by passing coke-containing catalyst in the downward direction through a regenerator without backmixing in countercurrent to a regenerating gas having a limited free oxygen content, so that nitrogen oxides are converted in an intermediate layer of the regenerator in a substantially oxygen-free atmosphere to form nitrogen, while carbon monoxide formed at the intermediate level is burned in contact with coke-free catalyst by additional oxygen which is fed to an upper level of the regenerator.
