To generate sound in an electronic musical instrument, it is proposed that a sound curve stored in a sound curve memory constructed as digital memory is sound-determining for all fundamental frequencies or some of the fundamental frequencies of the musical instrument by means of series scanning, the periods of the fundamental frequencies representing the frequencies of the fundamental tones. In contrast to the high number of memories required in known arrangements, only one sound curve memory is required in principle in the musical instrument proposed. Different sound characteristics can be achieved by reprogramming the sound curve memory. With a particular programming of the sound curve memory, all tones of the musical instrument exhibit the same tonal colour.
