In scrubbing sulphur-containing waste gases, in particular from coal power stations, using calcium oxide-containing or calcium hydroxide-containing scrubbing liquids in the circulation process, difficulties arise due to accumulation of chlorine in the circulating scrubbing liquid when significant amounts of hydrogen chloride and possibly also hydrogen fluoride are present in the flue gas. This is prevented by providing upstream a scrubbing stage, in which hydrogen chloride and possibly hydrogen fluoride are eliminated from the flue gas by means of clear water. At the same time, a desirable cooling of the flue gas occurs.
