As a rule, coal cutters with lantern drive have two lantern pinions meshing in the lantern, these lantern pinions being held in each case via guide elements in such a way that they engage in the lantern as favourably as possible. To this end, the guide elements are arranged symmetrically and are formed by the lantern pinion itself as well as by guide cheeks enclosing on either side or reaching underneath on one side. So that the lantern pinion itself can be used as guide element, it has a laterally formed running rim. The guide cheek opposite the running rim on the lantern pinion is of angled design so that uniform and smooth guidance of the lantern pinion is ensured. <IMAGE>
