The invention relates to a self-releasing torque wrench having a spring-loaded coupling between tool holder (19/19') and tool handle (1), which coupling effects the release and is formed by balls (22) which are mounted in a cage (19) and are stressed radially outwards centrally by an axially running tension spring (14) and which project with a part of their circumferential surface into depressions (23) in a bush (24) surrounding the cage (19), which depressions are rounded and have a greater cross-section than the outwardly protruding circumferential region of the balls (22), and proposes, in order to achieve a design which is easy to use, simple to manufacture and acts uniformly in both directions of rotation, that the inner cross-section forming the depressions (23) be formed in the manner of a polygon having rounded vertex regions (B) which extend on both sides above a central ball bearing point (P) and between which a short concentric cage-bearing portion (25) extends in an angularly symmetrical position with respect to respectively adjacent balls (22). <IMAGE>
