In the case of a twin-screw extruder, a layer of wear-resistant material is produced on the surface of the working space of the barrel (2) by spraying on and subsequent smoothing. The material is sprayed respectively in one bore (13), while at the same time the other bore (9) is covered, by means of a spray unit (15) which can move back and forth.
