A fuel injection system is proposed for the fuel supply of a mixture-compressing, spark-ignition internal combustion engine. The fuel injection system upstream of a throttle valve (24) in the air intake pipe (23) comprises a choke valve (32), which is displaced in the direction of flow as a function of the quantity of air drawn in and thereby displaces a piston slide valve (30) connected to it as a movable valve element of a metering valve (1, 41, 42). Downstream of the metering valve (1) the metered fuel passes by way of a fuel line (6, 54) into a control chamber (7) of a control valve (8), which is separated from a control chamber (10) by a diaphragm (9). The pressure in the control chamber (10) can be controlled as a function of operating variables of the internal combustion engine. From the control chamber (7) the metered fuel passes by way of a valve seat (11) to an injection valve (12), through which the fuel can be injected upstream of the throttle valve (24) coaxially with the air intake pipe (23). <IMAGE>
