A shut-off and throttle valve with a high adjustment ratio in the region up to 1 : 1000 contains a valve body which is connected to an actuating device and has a spherical surface which interacts with an annular bearing surface of a valve seat. Downstream from the bearing surface, the valve seat contains an extension with a hole which, in the closed position of the valve, projects over the centre of the spherical surface and interacts with the spherical surface forming a throttle gap. The spherical surface may be constructed on a cylindrical body, and the valve can also be designed to have a plurality of stages. The valve body consists of a material which cannot be machined or can be machined only with difficulty. <IMAGE>
