A pressure transducer mounted on the external wall of a diesel feed line between an injection pump and the diesel engine, as close as possible to the injection pump, is used to measure the expansion movement of this high-pressure diesel line and the pulses picked up are fed to an electronic evaluation unit. Since the number of pulses picked up per unit time corresponds to the engine speed and the length of the pulses is a measure of the time during which diesel fuel is injected, the following equation holds: Quantity of fuel consumed = Unit time Constant x injection duration x engine speed. <IMAGE>
