The relative orientation of two superposed eccentrics 120, 270 is varied to change the speed ratio of a variable speed gear 10, e.g. of the type comprising cams 43 on layshafts and driving gear-wheels 47 through one-way jamming roller, or the like, clutches 60, the wheels 47 meshing an output wheel 48 on a shaft 41, by means of gearing 80 and 90 comprising an input wheel 70 fast on an input shaft 20 and meshing a pinion 130, on a pin 200, also meshing a freely rotatable intermediate wheel 100 meshing a fixed pinion 140 which meshes a wheel 110 having a pin-and-slot connection 330, 340 with eccentric ring 120, the pin 200 being connected to one end of a spring 401, the other end of which is fixed to the gear housing, allowing the pin to be turned about the shaft 20 to effect automatic speed variation in dependence on load. Eccentric 270 is fast with shaft 20, and a knob 201 on pin 200 facilitates manual override of the manual control. Other than bevel gears may be used (not further described). The cams 43 are spring-biased into engagement with eccentric 120. |
