For the purpose of avoiding undesired impairment of the efficiency of an exhaust-gas heat exchanger due to deposits of soot, there is arranged, seen in the flow direction, upstream of a helical coil (coiled tubing) (3) through which the exhaust gases flow, but inside this helical coil, an exhaust gas soot filter (5) which, for the purpose of cleaning, is subjected briefly to exhaust gases at high temperature, as a result of which there is, in a manner supported by the arrangement of the filter (5) inside the helical coil (3), a brief temperature increase even in the exhaust gas soot filter (5), and soot is removed as a result. <IMAGE>
