An apparatus for working the end of a beam-like workpiece (12), in particular for cutting a workpiece tenon (35), having a rotating tool (16) arranged beside a supporting table (14) for the workpiece (12) and an ejection lever (24) pivotably mounted by one end underneath the supporting table (14) and intended for pushing out the worked workpiece (12), the working region of the workpiece (12) being covered by a lower and an upper protective cap (20, 21), between which a feeding opening (23) is left open, possesses a protective hood (30) which keeps the feeding opening (23) closed only during the working operation. In this way, chips produced during the working operation cannot penetrate to the outside through the feeding opening (23), but are sucked out of the apparatus by a suction device. In addition, the tool (16) is covered to the outside, so that the risk of accidents is reduced. <IMAGE>
