The invention relates to a working method for perforating wood, in which a plurality of needles are inserted substantially vertically into the wood surface and withdrawn again, each individual needle remains individually behind the joint insertion movement upon striking an obstacle and an overload protection which is actuated in the event of an overload is provided to prevent needle damage. To use needles which are as slender and thin as possible, provision is made for the insertion region of each needle to be scanned by means of a sensor which responds to the hardness of the wood and whose responsiveness is greater than that of the overload protection and which is activated only in the initial phase of the insertion process, and for each needle to be guided during the insertion process directly above the wood surface. A further subject of the invention is a corresponding device for carrying out the method.
