Disclosed is an improvement of a process for preparing diesters of malonic acid by subjecting ketene, carbon monooxide and an ester of nitrous acid to liquid phase reaction in an organic solvent, in which the reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst of a platinum group metallic complex represented by the general formula;
