The formation of methane in the rumen of ruminants is suppressed by administration of a compound (or of a composition containing it) of the formula: wherein X is H, Cl, Br, I or a substituted or unsubstituted C 1-9 alkyl, phenyl or C 3-9 cycloalkyl group or a group of the formula: where R" is a substituted or unsubstituted C 1-9 alkylene or C 3-9 cycloalkylene group, Y is H, Cl, Br, I or a substituted or unsubstituted C 1-9 alkyl group, Z is Cl, Br or I and Q is a group of the formula: or where R 2 is H or a substituted or unsubstituted C 1-9 alkyl, amino, C 3-9 cycloalkyl, phenyl or carbamoyl group of a 5-7-membered heteroaromatic ring or a group of the formulµ: or where R"' is a substituted or unsubstituted C 1-9 alkylene, C 3-9 cycloalkylene or phenylene group or 5-7-membered heteroaromatic ring or a divalent substituted or unsubstituted amino group or a divalent carbamoyl group, and R 1 is H or a substituted or unsubstituted C 1-9 alkyl, amino, C 3-9 cycloalkyl, phenyl or carbamoyl radical or 5-7-membered heteroaromatic ring or, R 1 or R 2 together with X forms a C 1-9 alkylene group that is optionally interrupted or terminated by an oxygen or nitrogen atom or R 1 and R 2 are each C 1-9 alkylene groups and are joined together by a C, O or N atom, the optional substituents on X, Y, R 1 , R 2 , R" and R"' being selected from: halogen atoms, C 1-9 alkyl, phenyl, halo-C 1-9 alkyl, nitro, benzoyl, C 2-9 alkanoyl, carboxy, carbo-phenoxy, C 1-9 alkoxy, phenoxy, C 1-9 alkylthio, carbamoyl, (C 1-9 alkyl)- carbamoyl, phenyl carbamoyl, dimethylamino, sulphonamido, amino, nitrophenyl, (C 1-9 alkyl)-phenyl, hydroxy, carbo-(C 1-9 alkoxy) or hydroxy-C 1-9 alkyl and 5-7-membered heteroaromatic rings optionally fused to a phenyl ring and optionally substituted by one or more of the foregoing substituents. Advantageously, the compounds (or their salts) are administered in the animal's feed ration. |
