PURPOSE:To enhance the activity of a platinum catalyst, by a method wherein a carrier having activated alumina on the surface thereof is impregnated with a platinum compound and the obtained impregnated carrier is reduced in two stages to form the dispersion state of platinum and to generate the fine pulverization of platinum crystal. CONSTITUTION:At first, a carrier having activated alumina formed on the surface thereof is impregnated with a platinum compound such as platinum chloride and the resulting impregnated carrier is reduced in two stages described hereinbelow. That is, in the first stage, the platinum compound is baked and, in the second stage, the baked compound is contacted with a reducing agent such as an aqueous sodium borohydride solution or an aqueous hydrazine solution. By this treatment, the dispersion state of platinum and the fine pulverization of platinum crystal are attained and the activity of a platinum catalyst is enhanced without increasing the support amount of platinum. |
