A strain of Pseudomonas, which exhibits acceleration of growth in the logarithmic phase in a trophic culture medium when hydrocarbons are added thereto, is used in a purification process by multiplying said strain in an area polluted by hydrocarbons. The strain is produced by culturing a Pseudomonas strain in a medium comprising hydrocarbons, nitrogen compound and brine (step 1); culturing the thus obtained strain in a medium comprising hydrocarbons, vitamins and brine (step 2); and culturing the thus obtained strain in a medium comprising brine and hydrocarbons (step 3).
