[Also in Divisions C2 and C3] A thermosetting resin, formed by mixing monomers of the formula: wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are each hydrogen, hydrocarbon radicals (defined) or (C 1 -C 4 ) hydroxyalkyl radicals, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are each hydrogen or hydroxyalkyl radicals, at least one of R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>5</SP> being a hydroxyalkyl radical, R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>7</SP> are each hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals (defined) and R<SP>8</SP> is hydrogen or a (C 1 -C 10 ) alkyl radical, with 1% by wt. of t-butyl perbenzoate is coated on a plywood panel, which panel is then baked for ¢-hour at 120‹C during which time the coating impregnates the surface and gels to form a protective film, emulsion, interpolymers and latices of the monomers, especially with vinyl carboxylates, alkyl acrylates, acrylic acid and certain acrylamides, prepared by polymerising the monomer mixture in aqueous suspension in the presence of suitable emulsifiers, surfactants and polymerisation catalysts, and optionally containing a textile stripping agent, may be used to form strippable protective coatings. A typical coating of this kind comprises a latex of the type described above, the reaction product of 2 equivalents of epoxidised butyl stearate with I equivalent of a zinc salt of a mixed isooctyl alcohol-dipropylene glycol phosphate ester, the reaction product of 1 mole of diacetone acrylamide with 2 moles of diethylene triamine, a high molecular weight linear water-soluble polysaccharide thickener, propylene glycol, an aqueous Na No 2 solution and a defoaming agent. |
