A mixture of normally gaseous hydrocarbons and inert gas is employed as the feedstock in a catalytic reforming process which may include steam and/or CO 2 . The feedstock is expanded and fractionally distilled in a column 3, the liquid fraction 4 being heated and regasified at 32 for delivery at 25 to the reformer 6 which is heated by burners 10 employing as fuel the gaseous fraction from the column which has been expanded at 9 and which contains most of the inert gas initially present. The feed is cooled in heat exchangers E1 ... E4 by the fraction 4 before entering the column. Recycling of liquid occurs at 19, 27. In a specific embodiment, the feed comprises mainly methane and nitrogen, with some C 2 to C 4 paraffins and CO 2 . This mixture, minus the nitrogen and about 1/3 of the methane emerges at 22 for mixing with steam and CO 2 at 12, 13. Methane and nitrogen go to the burners, and a hydrogen-rich gas is obtained at 7. |
