Electric steam iron (1) having a water tank (5) and a heated sole plate (2) possessing a steam-generating chamber (8) and having a valve rod (13) which interacts with a nozzle bore (12) and by means of which the water supply to the steam-generating chamber (8) can be opened or shut off, a cleaning needle (14) being coupled to the valve rod (13) for the purpose of eliminating deposits accumulating in the region of the nozzle bore (12), and the steam-generating chamber (8) being sealingly closed from the sole plate (2) by means of a removable insert part (7). To prevent the possibility of damage to the cleaning needle (14) in the event of a mechanical cleaning of the steam-generating chamber (8) accessible from the sole plate (2), the valve rod (13) is guided in a tube which is coupled in a pendulum-like manner to a removable closing piece (17) embedded in the handle (4). <IMAGE>
