In mechanical engineering, in particular, lubrication has been found to be a very important problem in relation to fault-free running, for example, of the drive units. In gearboxes and in other rotating machine parts, a wide variety of loads occurs, requiring the use of a corresponding variety of greases and oils for their lubrication. A precise test method for the lubricants was hitherto unknown, at least as regards repeatability. According to the invention this is achieved in a device as shown in the patent drawing by applying a grease or oil film to the surface of a friction roller (1). A fixed test roller (2) which is offset with its axis at 90 DEG to the friction roller (1) is then pressed with a defined force onto said friction roller (1). The friction roller (1) is then caused to rotate for a certain time and in this process an imprint is established on the surface of the test roller (2). The permissible loading of the lubricant when used in the mixed friction range can be deduced from this, in particular from the ratio of the contact force and the area of the imprint. <IMAGE>
