SiC was manufd. by forming a desired shape, e.q. fiber, from the polysilane ≮(Me2Si)(MeSi)≉n contg. 0-60 mol% Me2Si: units and 40-100 mol% MeSi: units, the remaining bonds on the Si being attached to Si of Cl to give Cl-Si ratio 0.3-1:1, and heating the shape in an inert atm. or in vacuo 0.1-4 hr at 1150-1600≦̸C. Thus, 66.7g chlorosilane contg. Me2SiCl2 2.7, Me4Si2Cl2 4.9, Me3Si2Cl3 40.3, Me2Si2Cl4 50.1, lower boilers 0.9, and higher boiler 1.1% was mixed with 2.5g Bu4PCl under N and refluxed at 70-80≦̸C to remove lower boilers, Me2SiCl2, and MeSiCl3. After heating 15hr, fibers were pulled from the viscous material and pyrolyzed in Ar at 5≦̸C/min to 1200≦̸C to give 47% fine grain β-sic.
