Despite the state of perfection and proven quality of known bicycle gear hubs, the associated gear-shift chain forms a weak point. Due to the friction against the rigid guide nut a sensitive gear-shift chain is gradually worn away and deformed; faults, difficulty in changing gear and total failures are the consequence. The guide nut with movable guide roller deflects the gear-shift chain in an extremely smooth manner and produces a gentle, sensitive actuation of the gear change. The protective cap protects the chain from damage and corrosion. Because, as is known, the end position of the guide nut, which serves simultaneously as wheel attachment nut cannot be determined in advance when fitting the guide nut, the swivel plate has the function of swinging in the guide roller into the correct position with respect to the gear cable.
