Semi-automatic and fully automatic machine tools generally have several tools which, during an operating cycle for machining a workpiece, act at certain staggered intervals on the workpiece. As a result, the tools are subjected to varying stresses, which leads to varying productive output among the tools. The monitoring device serves to monitor and indicate the moment at which the individual tools should be exchanged. For each tool there is a desired-output store and an actual-output counter, the values of which are continuously compared with one another by a comparator. When the values coincide, the comparator transmits a tool-change signal. A total-output counter counts the total productive output for each individual tool position. A tool-change counter counts the number of tool changes. From these two values, a dividing device calculates the average productive output for each tool position as an indication of whether the tools always reach the desired productive output or whether a change in the desired value or the workpieces or the tools is necessary. For the individual representation of all these values there is a multiple display field which can alternatively be connected via a selector switch to the stores and counters as well as analysing circuits for the individual tools.
