In a manually operated membrane valve, whose membrane interacts with a spherical valve seat of the valve housing and can be mechanically loaded on the side facing away from the valve seat by a spherical compression piece, the intention is to prevent the membrane being crushed, that is to say damaged, without the required sealing capability of the valve being lost. This object is achieved in the case of a membrane valve which is characterised by a closing spring (17) which stresses the compression piece (11) in the direction of closing the membrane (9), and by an opening spindle (21) which counteracts the force of the closing spring (17). <IMAGE>
