The invention relates to the stoichiometric polymerisation of long-chain alpha -olefin oxides in which polymers of narrower molecular weight distribution and/or higher molecular weights are obtainable than in catalytic polymerisation. The invention furthermore relates to the use of the polyoxyalkylene ethers or polyoxyalkylene ether ols prepared according to the invention as agents for preventing or removing foam, in particular in aqueous systems.
