Process for work-up of unconverted 1,2-dichloroethane in the preparation of vinyl chloride in which first the hydrogen chloride and then the vinyl chloride is separated from the gas mixture from the cracking furnace, and the remaining liquid stream is then let down, leading to separation into gaseous and liquid portions. The gaseous portions are treated with chlorine and then separated by distillation. The liquid portions are passed directly into the 1,2-dichloroethane separation stage.
