A device for the stepped vertical adjustment of the upper fastening or deflecting fitting for the shoulder belt of a safety-belt system in motor vehicles consists of a guide rail attached to a vehicle-body part and having a guide slot and recesses, into which engages at least one associated blocking member of a sliding piece carrying the fitting, a handle being provided for actuating the blocking member. The release of the sliding piece has hitherto been obtained by pressure on the handle designed as a spring. This presents the problem of the unintentional release of the sliding piece in the rail and release in the event of the destruction of the spring, for example as the result of a sharp collision of the vehicle. The object of the invention is, therefore, to prevent unintentional releases of the fitting and to guarantee reliable locking even in the event of an accident. For this, the locking and release of the sliding piece (11) are obtained by the rotation of the handle (19, 45) which can be connected indirectly or directly to the blocking member (25, 40, 51). The handle can be formed by the fitting (19) or be designed as a rotary knob (45) separate from this. <IMAGE>
