PISTON FOR AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

The piston (1) has a cast in annular insert(2) which forms a groove(3) for a piston ring. Below this there is a groove(6) to collect oil from the cylinder surface to precent leakage past the piston ring. The upper face(5) of the oil groove in inclined so that the annular ridge(4) between the oil groove & the piston ring groove is tapered. The base of the oil groove is rounded(7). Its lower face(8) is tapered slightly outward.
