The antidiabetic molanolines I (R1 = H, Me; R2 = H, hydroxy methyl; R3 = H, Me, Et, methoxyethyl) were prepd. by Raney Ni hydrogenation of nojirimycin, prepd. by fermn., in situ, in the culture broth. Compound I was obtained by treating the culture broth with CH2O and reducing. Thus, molamoline 3.0 g was melted in ethylengylcol 50ml and sodium dicarbonate 5.0 g and cinamyl bromide deriv. were added for 20min. It was mixed for 3 hrs and the reactant soln. was dild. by warer. Ether and n-buthanol were extd. and the remaining crystalline material was recrystallized by methanol mixing solvent to produce cinamyl molanoline.
