PURPOSE:To enhance the yield of rolling of short ingots and to reduce the costs by heating the short ingots shorter than the min. length at which they can be heated in a furnace or can be rolled with rolling mills in combination with other ingots in a furnace then rolling the same to the length longer than the min. rollable length and cutting and rolling the rolled ingots. CONSTITUTION:A short ingot 1 of a length shorter than the min. length at which it can be heated in a heating furnace or the min. length at which it can be rolled with rolling mills is combined with the other short ingot 2 or a long ingot 3 longer than the min. length at which it can be heated or rolled. Slits 4 are provided to the boundary where such combined ingots are combined by leaving a partly uncut part in the width direction of the ingot in order to facilitate the cutting after the heating and rolling. The combination of the short ingots may be accomplished by welding like a weld zone 5. The combined ingots are charged into the heating furnace and are heated. After the ingots are discharged from the furnace, they are rolled as they are with rolling mills, whereby the ingots are roughly rolled to the length of the short ingots longer than the min. rollable length. Here, the rolling is interrupted once, and immediately after the uncut part in the combining boundary is once cut, the cut ingots are subjected to finish rolling down to required sizes for each of the roughly rolled materials. |
