Method and arrangement for production of a massive bloom by electroslag melting

A method for production of a massive bloom according to the invention involves remelting of consumable electrodes in a melt container 1 and exerts a particular influence on the crystallization in the bloom during the course of the melting operation, which procedure consists in bringing a cooled body 8 into contact with the molten metal constituting the metal bath and maintaining this contact until the melting operation is completed by moving the cooled body 8 at a speed near the rate of melting. At the conclusion of the melting operation, the cooled body 8 is withdrawn from the metal bath. The cooled body can be fabricated in the form of a floating body 11 or as an extension piece which is widened at the bottom and firmly secured to a movable chill mould.
