The waste paper bin comprises a demountable bin (2) together with a pivotable lid (3) and a support (1). A fixed leaf spring (22) acts on a lid projection (25) to secure the lid in either the open or the closed position. The bin can only be demounted when the lid is open. The spring may be normal to the lid fulcrum (4) and may be folded, an inclined face (23) meeting a projection ramp (26) to resist opening movement, and a shoulder (24) engaging a stop face (27) to hold the lid open. The fulcrum axle (4) may be located by holes in parallel plates cantilevering from both the lid and the support and may use a sprung key effect to permit its axial withdrawal only when the lid is open.
