A disc-shaped permanent magnet magnetised perpendicularly to the plane of the disc is arranged freely rotatable about a vertical axis extending parallel to the plane of the disc, in a current loop through which a direct or alternating current flows. A luminous pointer and/or an induction coil with commercially available ammeter, frequency meter or oscilloscope can be optionally used for indicating the position and the state of movement of the disc. The resonance of oscillation is particularly advantageously utilised so that the magnetic field measurement can be reduced to a frequency measurement.
