The application is primarily to drives for winders in the manufacture of artificial threads where accurate control of tension is essential to the production process. The driving roller (1) and the bobbin (2) are driven by separate motors. The rollers has a synchronous motor integral with its shaft, and the stator is free to rotate against a restraint depending on the torque output. Coupled to the stator is the slider (13) of a potentiometer (14). The bobbin drive is by asynchronous cage type motor fed from a variable frequency supply. The control system keeps the torque applied to the bobbin equally shared by the two motors. If this equilibrium is upset the change in synchronous motor torques changes the spatial position of its stator and hence the slider position.
