1286591 Coating surfaces COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 23 Jan 1970 [31 Jan 1969] 3291/70 Heading C3P Surfaces are coated by preparing a saturated or unsaturated polyester by esterifying saturated or unsaturated dibasic acids or the corresponding anhydrides with polyhydric alcohols, esterifying all or part of the hydroxyl groups remaining in the polyester chain with unsaturated monocarboxylic acids, mixing the polyester as thus modified with at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s) which is/are copolymerizable under the action of ionizing radiation and which is/are added in a proportion by weight of between 10 and 60% of the mixture, applying the mixture to the surface to be coated in a layer having a thickness of between 10 and 500 Á, and curing the coating by copolymerization of the modified polyester and of the monomer(s) and under the action of ionizing radiation at a dose of between 0À1 and 100 Mrads. In the examples polyesters are prepared from phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, glycerol and succinic acid and are esterified with methacrylic acid in the presence of hydroquinone and copolymerized with ethyl acrylate or styrene in the presence of titanium dioxide using an electron beam on wood, metal or concrete panels.
