In this method, the sign of the direction of movement of the moving reflection object is determined by the change in the phase angle of the ultrasonic echo signal. It is provided that a first auxiliary signal, the phase angle of which is constant with respect to the received signal, is added to the received signal supplied by an ultrasonic receiving transducer, that a second auxiliary signal is added to the received signal, the phase angle of which is constant with respect to the received signal and, with respect to the phase angle of the first auxiliary signal, has such an absolute value that both aggregate signals formed from the addition processes are located in different quadrants. <IMAGE>
