An electromagnetic switching device, consisting of a coil former (1), which bears a coil (1a), is arranged horizontally, is surrounded by pole laminates (5, 6) and encloses the majority of a soft-magnetic armature (4) whose one end lying outside the coil former (1) is connected via an intermediate piece (60), which extends approximately at right angles to the coil former axis, to the end of a contact link support (10), which is arranged above the coil former (1) and can move parallel to its longitudinal axis and whose sprung contact links interact with fixed contacts (8), the magnetic circuit comprising the armature (4) and the pole laminates (5, 6) containing a permanent magnet arrangement (9) to reduce the required excitation power, which permanent magnet arrangement (9), for its part, comprises two rod-shaped permanent magnets running parallel to the coil former axis. The pole laminates (5, 6) extend on both sides beyond the corresponding coil former flanges (2, 3) and are formed into pole shoes (5', 6'; 5", 6") which interact with the armature (4). The armature (4) is supported in the region of its end which is connected to the intermediate element (60) such that it can rotate about a horizontal axis (at 37). In order to achieve a tristable switching behaviour, the armature (4) can interact with a spring (64) which gives the armature a stable central position. <IMAGE>
