A multicomputer system has a plurality of function units (ZIE, ZTE. ZÜE) which each contain one or more computing systems (Rl1, ... Rln) which control prescribed operating sequences and are provided with at least one data memory (DP11) of high capacity. In the event of the failure of a function unit, its operation is taken over by a standby unit. In order to achieve high adaptability to systems of different size, a plurality of function units are assigned a common unit (ZRE) which contains in its internal memories the programs of all the function units (ZIE, ZTE, ZÜE) assigned to it. It is connected to the external data memories of these function units in such a way that in the event of a failure of the function unit, the latter is disconnected from its data memory (DP11, ..., DP1m) and the standby unit (ZRE) is connected to the data memory. <IMAGE>
