A handrail profile or the like formed from plastic, in particular polyurethane integral flexible foam, is to be provided with a contact adhesive layer on its interior surfaces, which contact adhesive layer brings about simple and secure bonding to a bannister rail. In a process for coating the interior surfaces of the handrail profile or the like, the contact adhesive layer is introduced into the profile mould, before or during the moulding operation, by means of a protective film which bears against the mould walls effecting the shaping of the interior surfaces and is easily releasable from said contact adhesive layer. It is important in this that the contact adhesive layer is embedded between the easily releasable protective film and a support layer which is difficult or impossible to release and the support layer is adjusted for an intimate bond to the curing plastic. For this purpose the support layer may consist not only of talc and/or fibre materials, for example crêpe paper, but may also be formed from an aluminium foil or a plastic film, for example PVC, polyester or polyamide.
