A flexible container such as a bag 4 enclosing a product article 3 is closed by pre-heating of the bag mouth using radiant heat from heat lamps 5a, 5b followed by gathering of the pre- heated bag mouth region into a tightly gathered configuration in which the heated material seals to itself to provide a permanent seal. The sealing operation may be enhanced by closing together of upper and lower sealing bars 6a and 6b which preferably apply printing to the gathered bag neck. The gathering members 8a and 8b and the pre-heating radiant heaters 5a and 5b are positioned within a vacuum chamber 2a, 2b which allows the interior of the bag 3 to be evacuated before completion of closing. <IMAGE> |
