In a method of this kind for the horizontal continuous casting of metals, especially steel, the molten metal for casting flows into an uncooled storage container (1) and from there through a restriction (10) into a cooled horizontal continuous casting mould (3), and the cast strand (4), which has a solidified region (11) in the form of an annular crust, is pulled intermittently out of the horizontal mould (3). In order to avoid the unclean, non-uniform and cracked surface which arises when the cast strand is withdrawn continuously from the horizontal mould and, in particular, to improve the inadequate welding of the successively formed shells which occurs upon the backward jerk of the cast strand, leading to surface cracks, and in order moreover to increase the output of continuously cast material, it is proposed that, in addition to the intermittent withdrawal movements of the cast strand (4), shock-like pulses in the strand withdrawal direction be transmitted to the molten metal (1a) in the storage container (1) and/or to the molten metal (1a) or molten core (4a) within the horizontal mould (3). Apparatuses of two different designs are proposed for carrying out the method. <IMAGE>
