A punch press comprises a frame 12, a stationary housing 10 and a tool-holder 14 slidably mounted in the housing and reciprocated by a handle 18 through a rack-and-pinion mechanism. The punch tool 19 comprises a shaft 20 having a ball 22 at its upper end, a guide sleeve 28 fitted to the lower end of the shaft and a punch member 32 mounted in the lower end of the guide sleeve. The shaft 20 passes with clearance through a hole in the holder 14 and the ball 22 is seated in a bevelled socket 15. A screw 24 retains the ball in its socket and is adjusted to permit axial movement of 0À0001 to 0À001 inch. The guide sleeve 28 has a larger diameter 38 which has only working clearance in a centring plate 36, and a smaller diameter 40 which when it reaches the plate 36 during the downward movement of the punch, permits limited pivotal movement of the ball 22, shaft 20 and punch member 32. The apparatus is described with reference to punching fine holes in spinnerets. The stroke of the punch may be measured by a dial indicator 42. |
