PURPOSE:To obtain a phenol in high selectivity, by oxidizing a benzenemonocarboxylic acid in the liquid phase in the presence of a copper compound, a manganese compound and at least one of a barium compound, nickel compound and zinc compound added thereto as an oxidative decarbonating reaction catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A benzenemonocarboxylic acid or a salt, ester or anhydride thereof in the liquid phase is brought into contact with a gas containing molecular oxygen, preferably together with steam, in the presence of a copper compound, e.g. basic copper carbonate, a manganese compound, e.g. manganese oxide, and at least one compound of a barium compound, e.g. barium oxide, a nickel compound, e.g. nickel oxide, and a zinc compound, e.g. zinc oxide, to give a phenol. The catalyst contains 0.1-3wt%, expressed in terms of copper, copper compound, 0.1-5wt%, expressed in terms of Mn, Mn compound, 0.1-5wt%, expressed in terms of Ni, Ni compound, 0.1-5wt%, expressed in terms of Ba, Ba compound and 0.1-5wt%, expressed in terms of Zn, Zn compound respectively. |
