A hot melt adhesive applicator comprises an enclosed wheel glue pot (2) whose sides (3, 4, 5) fit closely to the sides of the applicator wheel (6). A doctor blade (7) and an anti-stringout wheel (8) precede and follow the applicator wheel. A remote tank (9) forms a reservoir for adhesive. A pump (11) controlled by a switch 15 feeds adhesive from the tank (9) through a flexible hose (10). Heating means are provided for the tank and hose and glue pot. Passages (12A, 12B, 13- Figures 3 and 6) in one side (5) of the glue pot (2) feed adhesive from the hose (10) to a pool (14) between the underside of the doctor blade (7) and the periphery of the applicator wheel (6). A chamber (16) is provided between the hose (10) and the passages (12A, 12B, 13) in the glue pot (2), with an inlet (17) from the hose (10) and an outlet (18) to the passages (12A, 12B, 13) in the glue pot (2). An adhesive level sensing means (19) in the chamber (16) operates the switch (15) when the adhesive level (L) in the chamber (16) falls below a predetermined level. <IMAGE> |
