1,114,445. Mass spectrometers. MULLARD Ltd. 3 May, 1966 [30 June, 1965], No. 27736/65. Heading H1D. In a crossed-field mass spectrometer in which the ions follow cycloidal paths the electric field is produced by one or a pair of helices 24, 27 composed of resistance wire and across which voltages are applied and wound about posts at least one of which is spring loaded away from the centre of the helix in order to take up slack in the wire due to heating. The posts are provided with notched ceramic sleeves and spring loading is accomplished by internal leaf springs. The ceramic sleeves are coated witn tin oxide to provide high resistance conducting leakage paths for charges. In the spectrometer shown 3 is the ion source and 34 the collector. |
