[Also in Division H4] A device for generating sound waves in earth or water comprises a radiating member, e.g. a resiliently-mounted plate 17, an oscillatory system coupled thereto and comprising a spring member and an inertia member, and an hydraulic power source which is periodically actuated to cause periodic movement of the radiating member. As shown, the plate 17 is connected to a cylinder 20 in which is a piston 21 connected to the spring member 18 which carries weights 19. Pressure is applied to and removed from the space 23 to below the piston to cause the members 17, 18, 19 to oscillate at a resonant frequency, which can be varied by changing the weights 19. Member 18 as a straight bar but may be replaced by a disc with annular weights (Fig. 4, not shown), or by a fluid "spring" consisting of a chamber (92) attached to piston 21 and containing a fluid in which is centrally supported by light springs a mass (94), the spaces above and below which are selectively connected to several hydraulic accumulators (100) (Fig. 5, not shown). In a further arrangement, (Fig. 6, not shown), the piston 21 is connected to a light piston (106) in a massive cylinder (107), the spaces above and below piston (106) being pressurized by compressed gas. |
