1,176,329. Isocyanates and isothiocyanates. ROHM & HAAS CO. 5 Jan., 1967 [6 Jan., 1966], No. 35352/69. Divided out of 1,176,328. Heading C2C. Organic isocyanates and isothiocyanates are prepared by reacting a carbonyl dihalide or thiodihalide with an amino ester or acid addition salt thereof, where the amino ester is a condensate of (i) a mono-amino-monocarboxylic acid, a mono-amino-dicarboxylic acid, a diamino-mono-carboxylic acid or a diaminodicarboxylic acid, and (ii) an alcoholic hydroxyl compound selected from C 2-18 dihydroxy alcohols where both hydroxy groups are primary, C 2-8 amino-alkanols, amino-alkoxyalkanols, and amino-alkylthioalkanols having a primary amino group and a primary or secondary hydroxyl group and primary or secondary monohydric alcohols. The alcohols may contain inert substituents and one or more ether or thiether linkages in the carbon atom chain. Products of the formulµ where X is NCO or NCS, m and n are 1 or 2, R<SP>1</SP> is the residue of a C 2-18 diol having primary terminal carbons, R<SP>2</SP> is the residue of a primary or secondary monohydric alcohol, R<SP>3</SP> is an alkylene radical having 2 to 8 carbon atoms which may contain inert substituents and an O or S atom in the carbon chain, and R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> are alkylene, arylene, cycloalkylene or aralkylene, are claimed. |
