Mixed oxides of the general formula (Uy,M1- y)O2, where M is plutonium or thorium, are prepared by compacting a powdered mixture of MO2 and U3Ox(8/sEx/sE9) into pellets without a binder, and a single stage heating in a reducing atmosphere at 250-450 DEG C., until the U3Ox is reduced to UO2, and then at 1550-1700 DEG C. until a sintered solution is formed. The ratio <FORM:1030465/C1/1> is advantageously less than 1/2 . The rate of temperature rise from the lower to the upper range may be 200 DEG C. per hour. The mixture of MO2 and U3Ox may be crushed in a ball mill using uranium balls and may then be compacted at a pressure of 5000-8000 bars. The sintered pellets may be powdered and mixed with less than 20% of the original powdered mixture, the resultant powder being compacted and heated as above under hydrogen. Crushed sintered pellets may be compacted by vibration for use as a fuel, or reduced by carbon to form (UyM1- y)C. |
