[Also in Division H5] A furnace for baking or sintering radioactive metallic or refractory pellets, e.g. oxides of uranium or plutonium comprises a tube 1 surrounded by refractory bricks 2 in a metal easing 3 closed by water-cooled doors 4 and 5 with seals 6 and 7, a molybdenum ribbon resistor 8 connected to terminals 11, 12, pipes 14 near said resistor 8 feeding atmosphere gases from a header 15a to points 16 near the tube ends and a slot 17 in said tube allowing gases to escape into a chimney 18 having a condensate trap 21. The latter comprises watercooled, hair-pin tubes 22 associated with staggered plates 23 defining a sinuous path for said gases. The chimney is sealed by a plate 25 with a central aperture 26 carrying a detachable flue 27 leading to external filters. The trap removes condensed tar products, lampblack, soot &c. produced in the sintering process and the ends of the tubes 22 may be protected from radiation by molybdenum plates. |
